After few days of meetings with my counterparts in Tianjin and Suzhou finally got a chance to go sightseeing on the last day of our trip There s afamous Chinese saying 上有天堂 下有杭 in the sky is Heaven s paradise on Earth is Suzhou and Hangzhou which meansSuzhou and Hangzhou are the closest things to Heaven on Earth I ve visited Hangzhou last Dec and hence have been looking forward to visit Suzhou as well Thanks to our two friendly colleagues from the Suzhou office who kindly be our guide for the day we managed to visit some tourist attractions despite the hot weather of almost 40 degree celsius We started the day early and headed first to the Humble Administrator s Garden æ‹™æ"¿ This garden covering about 52 000 sqm is the largest and most reowned garden in Suzhou Besides being listed as a World Cultural Heritage site the Humble Administrator s Garden is also considered as one of China s four most famous gardens at the entrance of the garden! The Humble Administrator s Garden was originally built in 1509 during the Ming Dynasty 1368 1644 It was initially a private garden of a former government servant named Wang Xianchen It was said he intended to build a garden after retired and just do some gardening work like planting trees and vegetables there which was said to be the life of a humble man by him Hence is the name of the garden the whole garden is full of lotus flowers which arefully bloomed in Summer some beautiful lotus the centre part of the lotus is actually edible bought some from the old lady Suzhou is also famous for its embroidery silk Next we proceeded to Guan Qian Street 前街 to do some shopping Located in the city center Guan Qian Streetis one of Suzhou s most famous pedestrianized shopping bazaar We had our lunch at theSongHe Restaurant 松 which has more than 200 years of history and serve good and authentic Suzhou cuisine at the Guan Qian Street Xuanmiao Taoist Temple ! Temple of Mystery located at Guan Qian Street photo taking s! essions with some interesting statues and my Suzhou colleagues our sumptuous lunch at SongHeLou yum yum sweet lotus stuffed with glutinous rice and SongShu GuiYu 松鼠桂 are two famous Suzhou dishes After a satisfied lunch we decided tovisit the Suzhou Industrial Park å·žå·¥ which is a modern industrial parkjointly developed byChina and Singapore The temperature in the noon waseven higher that we only managed to stay outside the car for less than15 minutes the well developed Suzhou Industrial Park Afterthe park tour most of the time inside the car we proceeded to the Tiger Hill 虎丘 which is famous for its leaning tower YunYan Pagoda äº'岩寺å¡" or commonly known as the Tiger Hill Pagoda A famous Song Dynasty poet Su Shi said It is a lifelong pity if having visited Suzhou you did not visit Tiger Hill 到州不游虎丘 乃憾事也 Hence it seems this is also a must go for sightseeing walking towards Tiger Hill In 496 BC during the Spring ! and Autumn Period 770 BC 476 BC He Lu King of the Wu perished during the war fought against the Yue His son buried him within the hill and three days after the funeral a white tiger came and sat upon the grave as though guarding it From that time on it has been known as Tiger Hill near the entrance of the Tiger Hill not uncommon to see water and bridges almost everywhere in Suzhou at the entrance of the Tiger Hill Due to the popularity of this place there re many locals gathering around the entrance offering to be your tour guide Though it s good to have one given the rich history of the hill which contains a number of historical sites some of which can be traced back over 2500 years to the founding of Suzhou ialready have my Suzhou colleagues with me to explain the history sedan chairs to bring you uphill the Sword Pool King He Lu was a zealous collector of rare swords and it is believed that they were buried beneath the Sword Pool as funerary objects An! other mystery that surrounds the tomb is the whereabouts of th! e remain s of the 1 000 workers who built it and who were put to death upon completion of the task According to my Suzhou colleagues itwas saidthat thepagoda will collapse if the swords are being retrieved from the pool and thus till now nobody dares to go dig the sword pool But obviously someone must had attempted to do so thus causing the pagoda to lean to one side the Tiger Hill leaning tower YunYan Pagoda As the oldest pagoda in the vicinity of Suzhou the Tiger Hill Pagoda whichstands on the hill s summit has come to be a symbol of the city and has the distinction of being China s Leaning Tower Built during the Northern Song Dynasty 959 961 it is a seven storey octahedron after the style of the timber pagodas built during the early Tang period It is 48 metres high 158 feet and for the past four hundred years has leant 359 to the northwest There re some designatedtime slotsfor one to climb up the pagoda but due tosomeoccasional thunder when we were there the gat! e to the entrance was closed Frankly it seems quite scary to go into this leaning tower given its current conditions the Third Spring in Tiger Hill Lu Yu ç¾½ was an authority on the art of tea and wrote the first ever book on the subject entitled The Treatise of Tea As an old man he lived on Tiger Hill and it was here that he wrote the final part of his book Lu Yu excavated the well and declared that the water from it was the third best in all China Consequent upon the research and teaching of Lu Yu tea growing and consumption came to be important factors in the daily life of the citizens of Suzhou some sealed wells and Spring of Simplicity and Honesty 泉 Our last destination for the day was the Shan Tang Street 山塘街 which is known as Suzhou s most famous street due to its1 000 over years of history During the Tang Dynasty 825 AD the great poet Bai Juyi 白居æ˜" constructed the Shan Tang C to connect the city with the Tiger Hill at the Shan!
